Bricks turning white and spalling bricks are some of the warning signs you need a chimney rebuild. A chimney rebuild is needed when the damage to your chimney can’t be fixed by replacing damaged parts with new materials.

In general, there are three types of chimney rebuilds, each with its own set of advantages. Batts’ Chimney Services, your trusted chimney sweep, elaborates on them below:
- Partial chimney rebuild – A partial chimney rebuild replaces a damaged section of your chimney. Contractors usually recommend a partial chimney rebuild if you have small chimneys that do not require scaffolding or damage is limited to the top sections of the chimney.
- Roof line up rebuild – As the name suggests, a roof line up tears down the chimney and rebuilds it up from the roof line up. And if the roof flashing (which is at the roofline) is rusty or damaged, your contractor will replace it as well.
- Complete chimney rebuilds – Extensive damage (such as severe spalling and mortar deterioration) and structural flaws will require a complete chimney rebuild. After tearing down damaged brick and mortar, contractors will add a new outer layer to the existing chimney structure.
Chimney rebuilds are a major renovation project that takes up a lot of time, money and effort. Fortunately, by having your chimney routinely inspected and cleaned, chimney rebuilds can be avoided.
How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Cleaned?
According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), you should schedule a chimney inspection at least once a year. Routine chimney cleaning lowers fire and safety risks by removing creosote (a highly flammable and hazardous substance that builds up in your chimney over time) while routine inspections help contractors find and fix chimney issues before they cause further damage and complicate repairs.
